In forms including Taboni, Tabuni, and Tabonus, this surname can be found on the Militia Roster of 1419. There was a hamlet called Ħal Tabuni, meaning ‘farmstead of the Tabuni family’ located near Siġġiewi.


From the a Siculo-Arabic occupational name relating to the Sicilian tabbuna and in Arabic at-tabuna meaning dug-out oven or hearth. It ,ay also originate from the Sicilian nickname tabbuni, meaning ‘fool, dullard’.
