HILI

Dating back to at least the late Middle Ages, it featured in the Militia Roster of 1417.

In the Arabic language, the nickname ‘al hili refers to someone who is “able, skilful, courageous”. Itself from hila (ħila in Maltese) meaning “ability, strength”. Another potential source points to the Spanish nickname gili meaning “fool, idiot”.
